Step 2 of 5
Obtain a Employer Identification Number (EIN). This is the business equivalent of a Social Security Number. This is what allows you to open a bank account with your business and file tax returns under the business’s name. If you are planning on running your business as a sole proprietorship, or a joint venture owned by a married couple, then you do not need an EIN number unless you plan to have employees. This can be obtained for free by filing form SS-4 or applying on the IRS website here.
